BugBrand and Squeely Noise Machines

I love devices that make odd sounds - even irritating ones by most standards... but I like 'em even more if they're portable and run on batteries and have non-standard controller options.

BugBrand is a seriously cool company. Check out their stuff - it's way crazy. I made a quick video-improv of their Postcard Weevil - but recently purchased the more advanced version as well.

If chaos, portable devices and odd sounds fascinate you, then check out Tom Bug's site and blog. Tell him 'antfactor' sent you there. WARNING: When he releases new devices they sell out SUPER FAST. He also makes killer sound modular gear as well. Amazing stuff... I want them all.

He even sent me this cool signed business card. Thanks Tom - you're stuff is amazing, and so are you.

Going Modular

Ever since I first got interested in electronic music, I have always wanted a modular synthesizer. Though still a bit pricey, they are extremely flexible, fun, very educational, and inspiring to work/play with. I've played with/programmed many, and even borrowed some at various times.

I would still like one. Perhaps a small system like this from BugBrand.

The good news is: they are probably more affordable, well sized, and powerful than ever. This great Sound on Sound guide to buying modular synths inspired me yet again to scratch a long-running itch. In time, I will have one for sure.

Chaos for Christmas

I'm notoriously late for lots of things - and because of that I'm often inclined to miss certain sales/items that may only have limited runs. BugBrand is a company I discovered a few years back. A small British based "electronic boutique" company that makes uniquely hand-crafted synth and sound... objects. Part of why I love these machines is there are no presets. You gotta make new things from scratch every time you use it... essentially forcing creativity

The last few times they introduced their AudioWeevils I had missed the production run - not this time! I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of their latest creation: behold... the 2012 Edition AudioWeevil (and logic schematic).

Controlled chaos to thine ears. Maybe it'll be a fun Christmas after all!
